"Formidable..."

...is a good way to describe the task at hand. "Prohibitive" may very well be another. All I know is that there is an antique medicine cabinet under there, and I'm going to find it.This in-progress picture is admittedly terrifying, but it gives you the idea of what I'm up against (five layers of paint at least.) What's even more terrifying is the knowledge that at one time this poor cabinet had a green door and red-and-white-speckled mouldings. Scary stuff, indeed.

the wood under there looks nice, It will look beautiful when you are done. But there is lots of elbow grease to be spent here.

Not sure this will help, but I had a painter friend who told me that you can get paint off wood with olive oil. I figure when you get close to the actual wood and there are just specks of paint left, you might want to try using olive oil instead of a scraper or steel wool to prevent damaging the wood. The task surely looks daunting, but think of the beautiful end result. Knowing you, it will surely be magnificent when finished! Good luck to you!!

No doubt that the medicine cabinet is grateful for your therapeutic touch.

Can't wait to see the finished product. I feel your pain, we inherited some odd paint choices in our home. I just can't understand hot pink on beautiful 8" baseboards. It hurts to look at.
